Abstract:
Precipitation data were gathered from seven rain gages throughout the Owens Valley. These data supplement precipitation data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration site at the Bishop Airport and other gages.
Purpose:
These data provide a more comprehensive view of precipitation in the Owens Valley. They may be used for interpolation of precipitation throughout the Owens Valley during the period of time the data were gathered.
Supplemental_Information:
Precipitation monitoring is an on-going project of the Inyo County Water Department. Data from 1992 (start of the project) through 1997 are currently available. Newly-gathered data will be made available annually.

Locations of precipitation gages are in shape file format created in ArcView 3.0. Associated precipitation data are in a comma-delimited ascii file. All files were created in Windows95 operating system.

Precipitation was measured to the hundredth of an inch. Rain gages were measured on a monthly basis from December, 1991 through September, 1993. Beginning October 1, 1993 gages were visited on an "event basis." Rain Gage #5 had been vandalized when visited 3/1/95, so no reading was taken. Rain Gage 3 was vandalized between 11/1/95 and 12/13/95. A temporary setup was used until a new gage was installed by 2/22/96.

Process_Description:
Precipitation data were measured in the field and entered into a spreadsheet at the Inyo County Water Department. All rain gages are cylindrical, steel, standard NOAA National Weather Service gages, 21" long and 8" in diameter. Each is placed in a steel cage (holder) which is secured to a concrete slab. The height of the opening is 36" off the ground. During winter operation (Nov. 1 - Mar. 30) the cylinder is left open to catch snow. During summer operation, a 2" cylinder is placed inside the 8" cylinder, and a fitted funnel is seated on top. Readings are always taken from the 2" cylinder: in summer the amount of water is recorded directly; in winter, the contents of the large cylinder are melted, if necessary, and poured into a 2" cylinder for measuring. Following measurement, contents of the rain gage are discarded and the gage is put back in the cage.

For the ArcView shape file of gage locations, entities consist of seven precipitation gage identifiers. Attributes consist of UTM coordinates for each gage. In the comma-delimited ascii file of attribute data rows represent dates when gages were measured, and columns represent the year, day of year, month , date, and precipitation measurements from the seven gages for the given date. A blank in the table indicates a given gage was not read for the given date.
